Seawater formulations

Saline nasal sprays may improve mucosal function through several physiological effects

The nasal sprays of the Otrivin Natural range may be used as an adjunct treatment.2

Both hypertonic and isotonic formulations:1,3

  • Remove inflammatory mediators
  • Improve mucociliary clearance
  • Moisturise the area

Hypertonic saline solutions decongest the nasal mucosa through the action of osmosis,4 while isotonic saline solutions aid decongestion through mechanical cleansing.1

Scientist in lab

A clinical study demonstrates that the administration of natural saline nasal solutions improves symptoms of nasal obstruction7

In a randomised double-blind trial, both hypertonic and isotonic saline nasal solutions were found to improve mucociliary clearance after administration, improving symptoms of nasal stuffiness and obstruction. In this study, isotonic saline was also found to improve nasal airway patency while the hypertonic solution had no effect.7

Seawater and natural saline nasal sprays are indicated for those who prefer a natural alternative for the relief of nasal dryness and irritation2

  • Hypertonic seawater and natural saline formulation

Hypertonic seawater and natural saline formulations provide a direct decongestive effect

Hypertonic seawater (2.2% salt concentration) provides a natural, direct decongestive effect by reducing swelling via the action of osmosis, and is capable of clearing the nose of mucus-trapped bacteria, viruses and impurities.4

    Woman sinus

Isotonic seawater and natural saline formulations cleanse and unblock the nasal passageways1

Isotonic seawater solution clears excess sticky mucus and encrusted debris to cleanse and unblock the nasal passageways.1,2

  • Woman using nasal spray

Preservative-free isotonic seawater nasal spray is recommended for:2

    • Gently cleansing the nasal cavities in the case of a blocked nose by washing away excess mucus and allergens
    • Moisturising the nasal mucosa when dry or irritated in the case of minor irritations or due to low humidity
    • Thinning and loosening nasal secretions to aid their removal

The isotonic seawater solution may also be used for nasal cleansing in both babies and adults on a daily basis.2,5

The hypertonic seawater spray is indicated:4

    • As a natural method of unblocking the nose
    • To reduce swelling of the nasal mucosa
    • To clear the nose of bacteria, viruses, and impurities trapped in mucus
  • Woman using nasal spray

Nasal irrigation effectively helps manage many sinonasal conditions

Patients who are treated with saline irrigation find they are less reliant on other medications for the relief of their symptoms and also require fewer visits to physicians.1

Nasal irrigation with seawater can be used on a daily basis to cleanse the nasal passageways,1,5 which may help to reduce the need for other medications to treat nasal symptoms,1 including antipyretics, nasal decongestants, mucolytics, and systemic anti-infectives6

  • Baby sleeping mothers shoulder

The usual frequency of use is 1-2 times a day per nostril, but if necessary, the product may be used as often as needed.1

Saline irrigation is suitable for infants through to adults, however, children under 11 years of age should be supervised by an adult. It may be more suitable to use saline solution vials for children below 2 years of age and a nasal spray for children over 2 years.1

  • Clinician and patient

Nasal irrigation with hypertonic seawater is well tolerated by patients suffering from rhinosinusitis conditions.1 Adverse events are found to be infrequent, but may include nasal irritation and discomfort, ear pain, or pooling of saline in the paranasal sinuses with subsequent drainage.8
